Sunset Fun {San Diego Children’s Photographer}

Sunday, January 22nd, 2012

Perhaps you’ve heard the phrase “photographer’s child” or “PCS – photographer’s child syndrom”… it’s true – these kids are overly photographed. Every time I want to learn a new technique or try out a new location, I am always dragging my kiddos along. I have come to expect the grumbles and groans, but know that it’s worth it because I’m always rewarded with some new favorites. Well, when I got the new camera I’ve been longing for a couple weekends ago, my 7 yr old son was not suprised when I told him we were going to be doing pictures soon! I think he was excited for the rainy forecast because he knew I wouldn’t drag him out into a field if it was raining. But late in the day, to2day, the sun finally burned through all the clouds, and we had enough time to run out to my favorite spot so that “mom could play”. Of course, I bribed them with ice cream if they were cooperative – what kid doesn’t want ice cream??? So here are my results :) Mom, couldn’t be happier :)

The Welch Family {Santee Family Photographer}

Monday, October 10th, 2011

To date, this may have possibly been my most enjoyable session. A perfect location, perfect weather, and perfect clients all helped. They were at ease in front of the camera, which allowed me to truly capture their personalities and relationship.  A truly fun loving family – does it show?

Sweet Baby “B” Turns One {San Diego Baby Photographer}

I’ve been photographing this little guy since just few days after his birth. Every few months he comes back for more pictures. He is turning into such a handsome fellow! Happy Birthday, Baby B!

Finding the Light Workshop Contest Winner

Thursday, August 25th, 2011

You know, I don’t win a lot of things, but I still enter contests just to see. Usually, I get close to winning, but I never end up getting 1st place. So, on a whim, I decided to enter the Finding the Light Workshop contest. The rules were to pick a photo that I felt best represented 1 of 2 quotes she provided.  So, I chose to enter this photo and quote:

“I thank you God for this most amazing day, for the leaping greenly spirits of trees, and for the blue dream of sky and for everything which is natural, which is infinite, which is yes.” E.E. Cummings

I figured, it never hurts to try, but just knew that there would be a lot of entries. What made it even worse was that I would not be able to see any of the other entries, so I had no idea what I was up against.

So the evening came that the winners would be posted… I actually almost forgot to check, but then remembered. I go to the Finding the Light blog and here is what I see: http://thelightworkshop.wordpress.com/2011/09/21/fall-2011-contest-winners/

My jaw dropped! I won, I won, I won!!! And to read on that there were over 1,500 entries! I was shocked, amazed, humbled, honored…. And more than anything, it was the sort of affirmation I needed to give me the push to keep growing in photography.

Congratulations to all the other contest winners, too! I’m so excited to do this workshop with all of you!

What to Wear Wednesday – {San Diego Family Photographer}

Wednesday, July 27th, 2011

Happy Hump Day!!!  So I’ve dubbed today as What to Wear Wednesday – because coming up with a picture perfect wardrobe for your family picture day can be quite a challenge! Keep reading for tips on putting together timeless outfits for your next portrait session!

DONT’S

  • Matchy matchy – The all white t-shirts and blue jeans is so cliche and so 90s!  You wouldn’t dress like that normally, so why would you want to dress like that for your family portrait – something that is supposed to capture your family at that point in time?
  • Patterns – They tend to detract from your beautiful faces – they are eye catching and distracting.  And if each person is wearing a different pattern, they clash, only making matters even worse! If you must have some sort of pattern, make sure it is subtle, and make sure that it doesn’t clash with another family member’s clothing. For example, don’t have more than one person in plaid (or better yet, avoid plaid all together).  This is not to say that you can never use patterns, but please use them sparingly! Stick to solids if you can!
  • Tacky shoes – Shoes really can make or break the look of your portraits. I would rather my clients be barefoot, but if you must wear shoes, please make sure they match the outfit (i.e., no white shoes with dark colored clothing) in style, color, etc.  Also make sure they are clean and the laces aren’t hanging out all over the place. Like patterns, shoes can be really eye-catching and distracting if you’re not careful.

DO’S

  • Color Coordinate – No, I do not mean everyone should wear the same color, but I do mean that everyone should be wearing colors that compliment each other. Check out a color swatch website (such as http://www.colorcombos.com/) to see what kinds of colors go well together.
  • Timeless Clothing – If you want that timeless look in your photos, you need to wear timeless clothing, and not necessarily the latest fashion trend.  Just keep it simple!
  • Layer and accessorize – Add some dimension and interest to your photos by layering your clothing, and adding simple (not eye catching) accessories to your outfits.

That’s it for this time, but tune in next Wednesday for more helpful tips and even some photos of a family wardrobe for your next family session.

Sweet Baby Mikayla {San Diego Newborn Photographer}

Thursday, May 5th, 2011

It has been a while since I’ve had a sweet little girl to photograph, so I was super excited to try out all kinds of fun frilly blankets and hats with Mikayla, but she wasn’t really having much of it – that’s just the way it sometimes goes with newborns.  After putting in a few hours of honest effort, mom and I agreed that she had enough for the day and that we would try again in a couple days. Sadly, little Mikayla came down with her first cold at 12 days old (no wonder she didn’t want her picture taken!) When Mikayla was about 3 months old, we finally got her back in to “finish” what we started 10 weeks prior. While the new photos weren’t as “newborn”-ish, we still got some amazing and sweet photos to remember Mikayla’s babyhood. Mikayla is such a beautiful baby with some amazing skin tones.

The Estevane Family – Mission Trails {San Diego Family Photographer}

Monday, December 20th, 2010

Sometimes I luck out and get a family that is just so natural in front of the camera that they can relax and forget that I’m even taking their pictures. It’s really a dream come true for photographers – because my goal is not to just capture your smiling faces, but to capture your personalities. This was true for the Estevane family. They arrived dressed perfectly for the woodsy occasion, and full of so much love and joy. It really shows through in these photos – the kids were so perfectly behaved and really didn’t care that I was taking their pictures! See for yourself! This family is beautiful through and through!

Little redheaded sweetie {Santee, Ca Newborn Photographer}

Monday, August 23rd, 2010

I had the pleasure of photographing the sweetest little guy with the most gorgeous red hair! I was expecting a chunker when I heard that he weighed in at 10 lbs 12 oz at birth!!! But was surprised to see that he really wasn’t all that chubby – just the right amount of chub to make him oh so cute! Although, his chubby face was too big for the cute little baby bear hat I made especially for this session…

I could’ve photographed little B all day, as he snoozed through most of the session, with just one little wake up  to eat. He sure did spoil me.  Another thing that makes him so special is his granddaddy was my English professor and my advisor at San Diego Christian College. I love being able to give back to a family that had such a great impact in my life!
Here’s a couple favs from the session.
